Many people mistakenly think that giving is a matter for the rich and the able. This is not true. Giving is for all the people of God, regardless of how much they possess.
About the Macedonian church the apostle Paul said, “We want you to know, brethren, about the grace of’ God which has been shown in the churches of Macedonia, for in a severe test of affliction, their abundance of joy and their extreme poverty have overflowed in a wealth of liberality on their part. For they gave according to their means; as I can testify and beyond their means of their own free will” (2 Corinthians 8:1-3).
The widow who gave her last coins gave out of her need. She did not wait to have more. She gave what she had. She was in desperate need, yet she gave. She gave the last bit of her wealth. I believe that as her last farthings went away, that created a place for the Lord Jesus to take over in a very great way. She gave out of her need and she was blessed for it. May we learn from her. May we all learn to give in that way and then we shall receive the commendation of our Lord. “Truly, I say to you, this poor widow has put in more than all those who are contributing to the treasury. For they all contributed out of their abundance; but she out of her poverty has put in everything she had, her whole living” (Mark 12:43-44).
